Close Encounters Program on the islands of Aitu
and Mangaia
A remote exotic experience. Spend three nights at the
lovely Aitu Villas giving you time for a guide to take
you thru the many caves located on Aitu. Very rugged,
and a decent level of fitness is required. Aitu is the
“island of the birds” and the only place in
the world that you will see the kopeka bird which resides
inside of the Antakitaki cave. Enjoy the Aitu difference,
step back in time.
Mangaia is the most southerly island of the cook islands.
It is the second largest in the group with an area of
52sq kms. Just over 1200 people live here, with the major
cash crop being taro. Various arts and crafts are practiced
on the island with the ceremonial adzes being a particularly
sought-after item. The island has three villages numerous
caves in the center. One cave, was the home of the legendary
cannibal priest known as Tangiia. Not to worry though,
cannibalism was banned prior to the arrival of Captain
James Cook in 1777.
